Education
- 2004: Ph.D., University of Zagreb, Faculty of Science, Physics Dept.; Thesis: Collective Electronic States of the New Quasi-one-dimensional Materials thesis
- 1998: B.Sc. work: Nonlinear conductivity in quasi-one dimensional organic conductors (TMTSF)2PF6 and (TMTSF)2AsF6 thesis
Some milestones from my Uni_Zagreb experience:
- 2003: Doctoral Seminar: Fazni dijagram kvazi1D kuprata Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 (2003) presentation
- 2002: finished postgraduate and started Doctoral studies. This phase is set apart for preparation of my Thesis.
- 1999: started postgraduate studies of Condensed Matter Physics at PMF - Department of Physics. Part of the course was to present my recent research to other students. I also had to perform thorough research of the literature in some other fields. This has resulted in a few seminal papers and presentations (in Croatian):
- Difuzno rasprsenje i difrakcija X-zraka u istrazivanju Q1D materijala (2000) paper and presentation
- Nelinearna vodljivost Bechgaardovih soli (2001) paper and presentation
- Transmisijska elektronska mikroskopija visokog razlucivanja HRTEM (2000) paper and presentation
- Istrazivanja prirode supravodljive faze Sr_2RuO_4 materijala (2002) paper and presentation
- Nehomogeni sistemi cilindricne simetrije (2002) paper
- Prijevod na hrvatski clanka objavljenog u Eur. Phys. J. B 21, 53 - 60 (2001) paper
- Utjecaj kvantnog Hall efekta na elektricni transport u FISDW fazi (TMTSF)_2PF_6 (2002) presentation
- 1990-1998: Faculty of Science - In order to become an educated person I chose the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Science (PMF) - Department of Physics. I heard it had the most demanding courses, but that professors/assistants do not harass the students. In this period I also served the country, spending a year in the Croatian Army barracks in picturesque Croatian cities of Koprivnica and Samobor.
- 1986-1990: high school - renowned "MIOC", Zagreb ("I" in "MIOC" stands for informatics, but I still didn't like that - now they don't like me. Windoze, that is...)
- 1978-1986: elementary school - "Antun Gustav Matos", Zagreb (it was the first elementary school in the country with computers available to pupils)
Positions, Projects, Professional Activities
- 2008-2010: Project leader PROTEASSIST project Protein Assisted DNA Monolayer Assembly. Grant by Unity through Knowledge Fund
- 2007-2011: Collaborator on the Ministry of Science project by S. Tomić Strongly correlated inorganic, organic and biomaterials
- As of 2007 I am appointed as a Scientific associate (a permanent position) at Institute of physics, Zagreb.
- 2009: Co-organizer for the Physics of Cells 2009, an EMBO event that gathered a fascinating line-up of speakers, addressing all aspects of the subject.
- 2009: Organizer of Open Day, the annual Institute of physics event for popularization of physics. That year it was my turn to attempt to increase the visibility of the Institute, and Sciences in general, amongst the high-school population.
- 2008: I have organized Christmas Biophysics Workshop, XBW 2008, the theme for this occassion were Organized molecular systems.
Research interests
Organized molecular systems, 2003--
- Since 2003, in parallel with preparing my Thesis (and out of its scope), I also joined dr. S. Tomić in her idea of entering the field of soft matter physics. Firstly, I concentrated on designing a chamber for measurement of complex impedance of samples in solution. Having finished the Thesis, I intensively switch from solid state to the physics of complex systems, polyelectrolytes and colloids in aqueous environment.
- For these systems, we demonstrated dielectric spectroscopy as a method capable of probing characteristic time and length scales in polyelectrolyte solutions - DNA being this polyelectrolyte, surrounded by its counterion atmosphere. This allowed experimental insight into DNA conformations in solution, which was not easily accesible with some more established methods, like SAXS, SANS or single molecule experiments or AFM...
- 2006-2007, I was on a post-doc in the group of F. Livolant, again at Laboratoire de Physique des Solides, Orsay, France. Here we are concerned how this interestingly "conformed" DNA is packed into functional structures, like chromatin or into sperm-heads or viruses. Again polyelectrolytic nature of DNA and various oppositely charged molecular species work together in making interesting problems for physicists.
- Specifically, I am studying RecA protein which forms a helix by polymerizing around individual DNA molecule. This complex takes care of general recombination and also of SOS response in the bacterial cell.
- 2008: My PROTEASSIST project Protein Assisted DNA Monolayer Assembly will tend to relate my work on DNA conformations with the RecA experience I gained with F. Livolant.
Low-dimensional materials, 1998--
- I started working in the research group of dr. S. Tomić, using low-frequency dielectric spectroscopy (LFDS) and linear and nonlinear transport techniques and investigating quasi1D materials: SDW phase of Bechgaard salts, Mott-Peierls CDW phase of DCNQI materials, CDW phase of quasi1D cuprates Sr14-xCaxCu24O41. My Ph.D.Thesis was based on this work.
- LFDS and most of the other low-temperature experiments are performed in the laboratory at the Institute of Physics, Zagreb. For high-pressure work on Bechgaard salts I visited (1999 & 2000) Laboratoire de Physique des Solides, Orsay, France, group of dr. D. Jérome. In 2002 & 2004 I also visited Universität Stuttgart, Germany, 1. Physikaliches Institut of dr. M. Dressel regarding the research of quasi1D cuprates.
- In this field I was primarily concentrated on experimentally identifying and characterizing the ground states of q1D materials, by varying parameters like temperature, pressure, magnetic and electric field amplitudes and frequencies.
- My work on Bechgaard salts resulted in removing the controversies about the influence of the quantum Hall effect on linear and nonlinear transport in the field-induced SDW phase of (TMTSF)2PF6. In (TMTSF)2PF6 I also confirmed coexistence of the SDW and SC phases in a narrow range of pressures where SDW phase is not yet fully suppressed and SC phase starts to appear. This work is my most cited.
- Working on copper-DCNQI materials I helped to identify the low temperature insulating phase of these materials as the N=3 commensurate CDW phase.
- Very important was my contribution to research of q1D cuprates. Here we identified a phase transition below which a CDW, characterized by a phason response in 2D, develops in the ladders subsystem of Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 materials. In related materials La6-ySryCa8Cu24O41 we identified hopping transport along the chain subsystem. This work culminated in a review paper discussing these materials.
- Lately, I am taking part in work of T. Ivek on BaVS3, latest hot topic in low-dimensional materials, as the nature of its different phases is still not established
